Get to know our animals
The value of pet ‘therapy’ is widely accepted as a powerful aid to stimulation and communication.
All the animals within our settings are regularly held and have interactions with all the children. This gives our children a sense of responsibility and eliminates any fears children may have.
Bobby
Introducing Bobby, our official nursery dog, who is a huge hit with the children.
Bobby’s breed is particularly known for having a calm gentle temperament, be deemed to be ‘hypoallergenic’ and be particularly good with children.
Bobby is accustomed to excessive attention and handling of small children and enjoys visiting children in their rooms, playing with them in the garden and going on walks with Pre-school and School’s Out.
The rationale behind the decision to have a dog within the nursery is so that the children can interact with a dog, and therefore it is of benefit to their social and emotional development.
Our chickens
We have our own flock of chickens who live in Forest School at The Old Forge in 2 large runs. Some of our younger birds were hatched at nursery and named by the children, who pulled names from a hat.
We encourage the children to play an active part in the care of the chickens, learning how to clean them out, feed them, make sure they have clean water and the best part… collecting the eggs!
During our Forest School sessions we enjoy letting the chickens out for a scratch and to eat some bugs, and if we’re lucky we get to stroke them gently.
Our beautiful nursery rabbits
Many of our nursery sites have their own bunny rabbits. With superb runs and cosy hutches the rabbits are huge favourites with the children. The rabbits love spending time in the rooms and exploring their large runs, where the children can interact with them.
The children love to see them binkying around, and they all love to help with cleaning, feeding and general care, but most of all they all love bunny cuddles.
Timon & Pumba
Timon & Pumba are our nursery Guinea-Pigs at Beeches Park. We’ve had these gorgeous guinea pigs from very young in September 2021 and they are a firm favourite at nursery.
The children enjoy regular cuddles and help with cleaning them out, feeding and general care, which they really enjoy.
Our Ducks
At The Old Vicarage we have some wonderful feathered friends, who love to splash in the water, waddle around, and quack cheerful hellos. RJ, Lucky and Eugene are gentle, funny, and very curious animals, and they can’t wait to meet the children.
The nursery take care of them together, learning how to feed them, keep them clean, and we love to watch them grow. Taking care of the ducks teaches us how to be kind, gentle, and responsible — and it’s lots of fun too!
