Did you know that a healthy gut can help support a healthy brain?
Scientists are learning more about the “gut-brain connection” and how the foods we eat can influence mood, concentration, learning, memory and overall wellbeing.
Research suggests that the trillions of beneficial bacteria living in our digestive system play an important role in communicating with the brain and supporting healthy development from childhood onwards.
Inside our digestive system lives a complex community of microorganisms
Microbiome power!
These beneficial bacteria help break down food, support immunity, produce important nutrients and create compounds that may influence how we think, feel and learn.
Scientists are increasingly discovering that a healthy, diverse gut microbiome may help support emotional wellbeing, resilience, attention and cognitive function.
A menu like no other
At our nurseries, we are proud that our menu naturally includes many foods that support both gut and brain health. Children enjoy fibre-rich foods such as oats, beans, lentils, fruits and a wide variety of vegetables which help feed beneficial gut bacteria and encourage a healthy gut environment.
We also introduce children to a range of fermented foods including natural yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh and kimchi. Fermentation is a traditional food preparation method that encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria and creates nutrients that can support digestive health.
While these foods may be less familiar to some families they are enjoyed around the world and are increasingly recognised for their potential benefits in supporting a healthy gut microbiome.
